Protocol usually shows up in attire, backdrop and angle discipline. The rules below merge the biometric frame with a diplomatic look; always confirm the issuing office checklist (UNLP unit, MFA, NATO HR).

Head straight, shoulders to camera, gaze on the lens. A slight “portrait” turn shifts the ICAO eye box. Chin-to-crown head fill sits in the document band (often 70–80% of the frame; mm ranges vary). Ears visible when possible; chin tip clear.

Neutral expression is mandatory: mouth closed, no teeth, relaxed brows. The last-6-months rule applies at most offices. Remove glasses when you can — glare and frames are refusal risks; medical exceptions need written proof.

Dark plain jacket (navy / charcoal), light plain shirt or blouse. If a tie is used, keep it matte and solid; shiny patterns, logos, sport hoodies, camouflage and oversized jewellery pull focus from the face. Uniforms only when the issuing office explicitly requires them.

Religious head coverings must not hide the face oval (chin–forehead) or cast shadow. No shoulder bags, badge clusters or lapel mics in frame. Goal: the officer / scanner reads the face — clothing is not a display.

Plain, shadow-free backdrop: white for US-style credentials; light grey or off-white for many EU / UN shoots. Patterned walls, flagpole shadows, gradients and softbox side light raise refusal risk. Colour filters and background blur are banned.

Light must be even on the face; a cheek shadow still reads as “amateur” on a diplomatic file. In a studio, ask for “ICAO biometric, neutral, protocol attire.” At home / office: window from the front, flash off.

Diplomatic / official (service) passport: outer size usually matches the ordinary passport; the difference is attire and presentation. UNLP: follow the UN office’s current JPEG / print note. NATO / duty annexes: sometimes ask for an extra ID crop — do not mix ratios.
