ANTS e-Photo Photo Norms 2026: Passport Photo Compliant with ISO/IEC 19794-5

In France most licence, Carte d’Identité and passport applications run through the state portal ANTS (Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés). You upload a digital file instead of only visiting a desk; the system scores the photo against ISO/IEC 19794-5 / ICAO biometric rules.

A casual studio “ID portrait” or a WhatsApp compress often fails. You need the 35×45 mm ratio, correct head height, a neutral expression and the official backdrop tone. The France passport photo tool applies those measures.

French ID / passport / licence photos are 35 mm wide × 45 mm tall. Head height from chin to crown (not hair volume) is typically 32–36 mm — about 70–80% of the frame. The eye line stays in a fixed band relative to the frame.

Do not mix this with the US 2×2 inch square or Spain’s 26×32 mm. Squashing the wrong ratio into ANTS distorts the face and triggers a refusal code.

ANTS / Service-Public expect a plain, light, shadow-free backdrop. In practice most accepted tones are light grey or a slight blue-grey; patterns, gradients, textured walls and hair shadows cause refusals. A US-style bright “cream studio” backdrop is risky.

Side shadow on the face, flash hotspots and background blur (Portrait mode) are banned. Use soft window light from the front or about 45°.

Front gaze, head straight, shoulders visible, mouth closed, neutral expression. Glasses are risky on most filings (glare / frames) — remove them if you can. No hats or face-blocking accessories; a religious covering must not hide the face oval.

The last-6-months rule applies. Colour filters, beauty mode and heavy makeup hurt biometric matching.
