How Old Can a Passport Photo Be? (The 6-Month Rule Explained)
In most countries a biometric passport photo must have been taken within the last 6 months. Why reusing an old JPEG gets refused — and how to make a fresh one at home in seconds.
Short answer: usually no more than 6 months
Under most passport and visa rules, a biometric photo must have been taken within the last 6 months. It has to show how you look today — hair, beard, weight and ageing included — not a studio print from years ago or the identical JPEG left over from a previous application.
Use our AI-powered United States Passport Photo Tool to auto-crop your image in 3 seconds.
The search intent is clear: *how old can a passport photo be?* Official practice almost everywhere points to the same window: frames older than six months are risky. Size varies by country (US 2×2 in, Schengen 35×45 mm, Türkiye 50×60 mm); the age rule is far more universal.

Why old photos get refused
Officers do not only check a calendar stamp. Hair, beard, clear weight change, surgery or rapid growth in children can break the “current appearance” rule. The sharper risk is re-uploading the identical pixel file from a previous application — many systems flag that as an old or reused photo.
Country-specific matching layers exist too: VIS for Schengen, NVI biometric checks in Türkiye, automated quality and appearance checks on US and UK portals. The shared outcome is the same: an old or copied frame means refusal or a wasted appointment. For Schengen file reuse in depth, see Can you reuse an old passport photo for Schengen? (6-month rule).

Quick notes by country
US passport / visa: the photo must show how you look in the last 6 months; 2×2 in, white / off-white background. Schengen / most of the EU: 6 months + 35×45 mm; do not copy a previous visa JPEG. United Kingdom: HMPO also wants the last 6 months; use a current JPEG for digital upload. Türkiye: NVI expects 50×60 mm, white background and the last 6 months for passport, national ID and licence — size detail in Türkiye biometric photo 50×60 mm NVI rules.
Applying elsewhere? Confirm the official checklist on the document page; the age window is often 6 months, but millimetres and background tone still change.
When to renew even inside 6 months
If your appearance changed clearly (new beard / hair, large weight shift, facial surgery), shoot again even inside the window. Baby and child photos age within months. Blurry, shadowed, beauty-filtered or WhatsApp-compressed files fail regardless of age.
Scanning an old print or “re-cropping” it does not reset the 6-month window — you need a new capture.

A current biometric photo without the studio
No time for a studio — or tired of paying again for a print you already own? A sharp front-facing selfie is enough: beauty / Portrait mode off, plain wall.
The FotoPass passport photo tool turns that selfie into your country’s biometric size, compliant background and current application standard in seconds. It does not “refresh” an old file; it builds a new compliant frame from how you look today — no studio queue, no extra counter fee.
Pre-application checklist
- 1
Photo ≤ 6 months and matches how you look today.
- 2
Not the identical JPEG from a previous filing.
- 3
Correct country size and plain official background.
- 4
Neutral expression, sharp face, no beauty filter.
- 5
If unsure, shoot today and run it through FotoPass — do not lose the appointment over an old print.
